Ziarat of Ashoora
From Imam baqer (AS)
In the name of god most compassionate, most merciful
1- Imam (AS), at the beginning, reminds us the lineage of Imam Hussein (AS).
Peace is due to you O Aba abd-Allah! Peace is due to you O the son of the messenger of Allah! Peace is due to you O the son of the Commander of the faithful and the son of the master of the legal guardians! Peace is due to you O the son of Fatemah, the first lady of the women of the world!
2-He displays then his distinguished position in the sight of God.
Peace is due to you that God Himself will avenge your bloodshed and your father’s, and He Himself will appeal for the oppression happened to you which is not yet advocated. Taking the vengeance of the bloodshed on behalf of Imam Hussein (AS) is predicted in the Old-Testament, the book of Jeremiah, verse 10, “this is the day of the Lord God of hosts to take vengeance on his adversaries, and His sword will devour, be satisfied, and drink with their blood for the Lord God of hosts has a sacrifice in the north Country by the river Euphrates.”
3-His outstanding virtues in the eye of those who knew him
Peace is due to those souls who settled down to martyred with you. The peace of God from my part is due to all of you eternally as far as I am alive and nights and days remain.
O Aba abd-Allah! Indeed your heavy loss and disaster is not only outstanding and magnificent to us, and to all Muslim; but it is stately and great to the dwellers of heavens as well.
Thus God has cursed the nation who established the foundation of oppression and inequity upon you Ahl-al-beit. And God has cursed the nation who drove you back from your position and removed you from the rank which God had arranged for you. And God has cursed the nation who killed you and those who submitted to kill you. Turning to God and you, I repudiate them, their followers, adherents and supporters. Since the range of action of oppression is much more than that of inequity, it is necessary to explain about them. Explaining these two terms will make clearer and easier to understand the contents of this Ziarat. In another call regarding to the Imam of the age (AS), there is this statement: peace is due to you O the Imam of the age! This is the peace of a devoted in your friendship, and I bear witness that you are the guiding Imam in your word and act, and you are the one who fill the earth with fairness (Qist) and justice (Adalat), after being filled with oppression (Zolm) and inequity (jaur).
Qist or fairness means being fair to himself, others and God, while adalat or justice means to adjust his own behavior and speech. The same discord is found between oppression and inequity. An oppressor may be oppressive to himself, to others and to God, while a tyrant is only unjust in his own speech and behavior. And these are Quranic statements for those terms whereas God (SWT) outweighs qist over adalat:
1-To be oppressive to God, O son! Do not associate anything with God; surely association is a great oppression. 31: 13
2-God (SWT) does not oppress any servants. 40: 31
Those who disbelieved said to their messengers, we most surely evict you from our land unless you come back to our religion. Their Lord then revealed them, most surely We destroy oppressors. 14: 13
3-To be oppressive to himself; they both said, ‘Our Lord! We oppressed ourselves, if you do not forgive us and have no mercy upon us, surely we will be of the losers. 7: 23
Regarding His absolute fairness, the Lord God has revealed:
1-God, while standing on fairness, bears witness that there is no deity beside Him, and angels and those possessed of knowledge bear witness about His uniqueness. While there is no deity beside Him, He is unique in Might and wisdom. 3: 18
Angels and those possessed of knowledge can only bear witness that God is Unique, but how can they bear witness about God’s absolute fairness in His acts?
2-if two groups of believers fight with each other put them in order. But if one of them oppressed the other one, fight the oppressing group until this group shifts back to the command of God. And after shifting back, put them in order by justice and fairness, actually God loves those who are fair.” 49: 9
3-Truly God commands you to submit the deposited in trust to whom they are due, and when you judge among people, judge in justice. Surely, God admonish you in what is excellent. 4: 48
As a result, oppression is more extended in its scope than inequity, as fairness is more applicable than justice.
4-Why do oppressors and the tyrant deserve to be cursed?
Not only did Bani Omay-yad oppressed themselves by preferring disbelief over faith, but oppressed other Muslims by misleading them from the right path; and oppressed the dignity of God by martyring His envoys; and exceeded His Devine limits, by looking every righteousness down.
“Surely those who conceal the clear signs and proofs after being revealed for people in the book, God and cursers will curse them.” 2: 159
“ I will turn away My revelations from those who unduly take pride on earth; if they see every sign, they do not believe; if they see guiding path, they do not take it; but if they see misleading path, they will take it; because they have denied Our signs and were negligent to them.” 7: 146
In fact, their essential characters were like this, they disobeyed what they were commanded, concluded what they were prohibited, claimed they have forgotten, and made others forget what they were reminded; alleged they were blind, and made others blind in what they were enlightened; and while they were warned to be friend with their spiritual leaders, they harbor hostility to them which of course this reaction was not only right at all in return to God’s charity, but was a great contempt to God’s dignity.
O Aba-abd-Allah! I am at peace with those who are at peace with you, and at war with those who are at war with you until the Day of Judgment. And God has cursed the clan of Ziad, Marvan, and Omayed all together. God has cursed the son of Marjaneh, Omar the son of Sad, Shemr, and those who put saddle and bridle upon horses and worn masks to make everything ready for killing you. As you can see this case was so important in the sight of God that nothing was omitted for being cursed.
O Aba-abd-Allah! You are you are as dear to me as my own father and mother. Indeed your disaster is great to me, thus I ask God who honored your rank to bless me to be able to avenge your bloodshed with the supported Imam of the household of Mohammad, bless, grant, and God’s salvation be with him and his family.
O God! Make me distinguished by the virtues of Hussein (AS) in this and the life to come. O Aba-abd-Allah! I come near to God, His messenger, Commander of the faithful, Fatemah, Hassan, and you by friendship and repudiating from those who declared war on you and established the foundation of oppression and inequity against you. By repudiating from those who established the foundation of oppression and inequity, and on top of that, they built a structure to carry out oppression and inequity on you and your followers, I come near to God and His messenger.
5-And this is a true meaning for mavadat, beyond friendship.
By turning to God and you from them, I come near to God then to you and your friends by my friendliness, and by repudiating your enemies and those who declared war on you and repudiating from their followers and adherents.
Indeed, I am at peace with those who are at peace with you, and at war with those who are at war with you, and a friend of those who are friend of you, and enemy of those who are enemy of you.
6- Wishing for having knowledge of Imam
Thus I ask God for blessing me to have some knowledge of you and your friends and help me to actually repudiate from your enemies, and put me with you in this life and the hereafter, and make fast my firm decision in this and the life to come.
And I ask God for reaching me the same praise-worthy position you have before Him.
7-What does taking avenge for bloodshed after 14 centuries mean?
According to the Qur'an which says, ‘so remember Me to remember you, thank Me, and do not disbelieve. Imam Hussein (AS) extremely struggled to practically thank God to save the most important Devin’s slogan regarding to human nature and true religion (Islam) by a generous sacrifice of his blood-life.
He thanked, in a full scale, by his tongue, hand and heart to save human nature and Islam which were on the verge of total destruction. God (SWT) has revealed this, ‘Thus resist openly for the true religion, the nature of God upon which He created people, there is no change in God’s creation, this is a precious, valuable or caretaker religion, but most people do not know.” 30: 30
Human goal is his happiness or good-fortune not misfortune. Human happiness should neither change in case of time, place, ethnicity or religion but by his nature adopted through God’s nature which never changes. Through a sacred Hadith, God (SWT) said, ‘I was a hidden treasure but I loved to be known, so I created creature to be known.”
Through his generous sacrifice, Imam Hussein (AS) revived human nature (God’s nature). But what a pity that not realizing the nature of Imam Hussein’s bloody movement, negligent people criticize his sincere sacrifice, whereas today we witness that oppressors, all around the world, mercilessly massacre those who are weaker as easily as drinking water. With his bloody message, Imam Hussein (AS) made clear that the weaker must not compromise with oppressors, and criminals should remember that their true nature compel them morally to stop cruelty and desist blood-shed. The known slogan regarding the tragedy Karbala which says, ‘everywhere is Karbala, and every moment is Ashoora’ was absolutely true in past, and is a reality for time being. The rest of this Ziarat is against bullies and their wage-earners who deliberately wish to put off such an important message for all people around the glob.
I ask God to give me a chance to avenge your bloodshed with Imam Mahdi, revealing and speaking nothing but the truths. And by your truth and the rank you have with God, I ask Him to grant me the best return is given to any afflicted through your disaster. What a disaster could be greater than yours in Islam, within heavens and in the whole world?
8-To pray earnestly
O Allah! place me among those receiving your greeting, mercy, and forgiveness because of my great mourning for such an inadmissible disaster. Keep me alive to the religious custom of Mohammad and his family and make me die in the same way that you made them die.
9-Cursing devils wherever they are
O Allah! Omay-yad dynasty enjoyed killing Imam Hussein (AS) on this day. And Yazid, the son of liver eater and the son of the cursed Moavieh is coursing through your mouth and your messenger’s mouth any where in the whole world whose true followers are. O Allah! Curse perpetually Abusofyan, Moavieh, and Yazid the son of Moavieh. O Allah! Increase your curse and painful punishment upon the family of Ziad and Marvan for their enjoyment of killing Imam Hussein (AS) on this day.
O Allah! I get close to you at this time and place, and in all my life, through cursing them and repudiating from them, and by the friendship of your prophet and his family, peace be upon them all.
O Allah! Curse the first oppressor and the last one who did wrong against Mohammad and his family. O Allah! Curse the group who fight against Hussein, and made a pledge of allegiance to follow and support each other to killing him. O Allah! Curse them all not once but hundred times.
Peace upon you O Aba-abd-Allah! And upon those souls who settled down with you. The peace of Allah be with you from me forever, as far as I am alive and days and nights remain, and I hope that it won’t be my last visit with you. Peace is due to Hussein, Ali the son of Hussein, Hussein’s progeny, and his companions not once but one hundred times.
O Allah! Specify the first oppressor by my curse and begin your curse with the first, the second, the third, the fourth and curse Yazid, as the fifth one. And curse Obeid the son of Ziad, the son of Majaneh, Omar the son of Sad, Shemr, the family of Aboosofyan, the family of Ziad and the family of Marvan until the Day of Resurrection.
O Allah! I praise you, like the grateful who praise you for the opportunity of their mourning in their disaster. All of my praise is due to God for the reward I receive in return to my great mourning of their disaster. O Allah! Bless me by Hussein’s intersession and make my sincerity firm with Hussein and his companions, those who lovely and generously gave their lifeblood before Hussein (AS), on the day that I come to you.
